Why Do People Quit Trying to Make Money With eBooks?

Not that long ago I was having a conversation with a friend of mine who recently got started in the eBook publishing business. This guy isn’t out to make a fortune, he just wants to create an automate business that can generate at least $500 a month in extra income. He already made a sale and is really excited about continuing to grow his new eBook business. Around the same time, someone else who I’m acquainted with told me they were quitting the business. This other individual told me that he couldn’t make any money with eBooks, and doubted if anyone could.

It got me thinking about why some people make some very useful income with eBooks whereas others make nothing and end up feeling bitter and frustrated by the entire process. Here’s my theory. The smarter you are, the more formally educated you are, the tougher it seems to be to make money with eBooks. Why? I think it’s because there’s a tendency to over-think things. I actually consider myself to be pretty smart, and do have some college credits to my name. And you know something? I struggled to get my business off the ground. I’d rehash things over and over in my mind. I’d wonder what other people would think. I often had lengthy ethical debates with myself about various things. Looking back at this now, it’s a miracle I made it this far.

Here’s the bottom line. You’ve got to dumb yourself down to having the mind of a mouse. A mouse doesn’t sit around feeling sorry for itself. It doesn’t get side tracked by emotions and feelings. It searches for food. If it doesn’t find food in one corner, it goes off to another corner to keep looking. Likewise, you’re going to run into some challenges along the way as you build an eBook publishing business. Please, don’t be like me. Don’t wallow in doubt and philosophy. Just focus on finding out what people want, and giving it to them. Yes, highly uncreative. But guess what? That formula has made me financially independent as an eBook publisher.
